We believe that diversity, inclusiveness, and respect among our lawyers and staff members are essential, and that they strengthen our entire Firm. As a diverse and inclusive organization, we can more effectively serve a broad range of clients and enable our lawyers to grow from the creativity, talents, and perspectives contributed by people of different backgrounds and experiences.

Cleary Gottlieb strives to encourage and foster diversity across the Firm. As a testament to our mission and commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are pleased to solicit applications for our Annual 1L Diversity Summer Associate Program in the Washington, DC office.

Candidates who are interested in applying to the program should be members of a diverse population that is underrepresented in the legal profession. Candidates should have an anticipated graduation date of spring 2015 and must be able to participate in Cleary Gottlieb’s 2013 Summer Associate Program for a minimum of 8 weeks. Selected candidates will work in the Washington office and will not be eligible to participate in the Firm’s overseas rotation process during the summer. Selected candidates who wish to be considered the following year for a 2L summer associate position will have to re-apply to the Firm.

A lawyer must be able to empathize in order to properly understand the needs and concerns of his or her client, but a lawye must develop objective, analytical skills to identify the potential legal issues that must be addressed and then to formulate a plan to reach a result that is consistent with the desires of the client as well as the requirements of the law.
